The underground city

In the heart of the town there is an enchanting underground itinerary made of caves rich in archeological finds that have been recently brought to light after centuries of silence.
Speleological research in the urban area began at the end of the 1970s with a census that led to the identification of about 600 underground complexes. The Special Laws for the consolidation of the cliff have, subsequently, provided the funding for the thorough and accurate mapping of the caves increasing the knowledge of the about 1200 underground rooms present within the cliff. An enormous historical and archaeological heritage that is essential in order to understand Orvieto and perhaps it is one of the most enchanting keys with which to enter into the dimension where history, cultural roots and time have left a profound and tangible mark in the heart of the city.
